A Course in Gilding with Peter Murphy
We are offering a 5 day course suitable for beginners & students of higher levels of ability, no artistic experience is required. Aim is to introduce students to different elements of gilding techniques, inc. water gilding and assist.
Places reserved with a £100 deposit.
The course fee is £450 per student for a five day course.
Included for students to use in the course: a panel from Miroslav Zivanovich, gold leaf, pigments, brushes and specialist gilding tools, burnishers, punches etc. We ask students to bring sketchbook/paper, pencils, an apron and some good quality scissors.

Day One, rubbing down of the panel with wet and dry paper, transferring the image of the head and shoulders of an Italo Byzantine Mother of God to the panel, I can send the image in advance to more advanced students who are often anxious to do their own drawing. Making and laying down of at least ten layers of gilders clay (bole)
Day Two, rubbing down of the bole with several grades of wet and dry paper until it shines, applying there layers of 23.5 ct gold and polishing with agate burnishers to a reflective mirror finish.
Starting to punch and stipple decorated halo if time permits.
Day Three, completion of stamped, punched and stippled halo decoration. Laying of simple Ploplasmos technique colours for the icon.
Day Four, Painting the face of The Mother of God using a traditional Byzantine and Italo Byzantine Proplasmos technique, stage by stage instructions and full colour images will be provided.
Day Five, completing the painting, using crysography/assist gilding to apply gilded decoration on the robes. Painting of casein red roundels through which we will then do the inscription lettering using the sgraffito technique.
